Dental Tourism: What You Should Know Before Travelling Abroad for Treatment Abroad

Updated: 2 days ago

dental tourism

In recent years, dental tourism has become increasingly popular. The draw of combining a holiday in the sunshine with a dental treatment seems like a good offer. But you need to carefully consider the risks involved before proceeding. Whilst some patients, who have done a lot of research, return happy with their experience, here at M Dental Greenwich we frequently see the other side of the story.

At M Dental Greenwich we have seen a number of patients who, having come back from abroad, have experienced complications. In some cases those patients have needed corrective work, often urgently. M Dental has treated dental tourism patients for:

  • Poorly fitting crowns or bridges

  • Failed implants

  • infections

  • Gum problems

Returning to the UK after experiencing dental tourism gone wrong can be distressing for patients. They can be uncomfortable, scared and worried about further costs they may be facing. We often see, in the case of dental tourism, that patients experience frustration over lack of contact from the dentist who carried out the procedure along with lack of aftercare and confusion as to what has gone wrong.

Dental Tourism - Why It Is Different From The Treatment You’ll Receive In The UK

The main difference is around the quality of care and treatment. This is largely because with dental tourism, regulations and standards vary. In the UK, all practising dentists must be registered with the General Dental Council (GDC). It is their job to ensure they meet strict professional, ethical, and clinical standards. Essentially here in the UK dentistry is a highly regulated industry. All UK dentists must also have adequate insurance to undertake dental treatments. This also means that they must adhere to certain standards as well as having a clean complaints procedure.

Sadly the above cannot be said for all dental tourism countries. Other countries, which of course vary country to country, have very different systems. Whilst many overseas dentists are skilled and professional, the level of regulation, accountability, and oversight may not be the same. The materials used by those dentists will also differ in quality, and treatment plans can sometimes be rushed to fit the timeframe of a short visit. Something that here at M Dental Greenwich we highly recommend against. Here at M Dental Greenwich we:

  • Insist on personalised Treatment Plans and take the time to ensure our patients understand their options along with the pros and cons;

  • We only use state-of-the art equipment along with high quality tried and tested materials.

Dental Tourism Aftercare

Another consideration is the aftercare a patient should receive. Dental treatments need aftercare and someone available to answer questions. Treatment options like dental implants or Smile Makeovers require follow-up appointments, adjustments and monitoring. Something that is almost impossible from a dentist that is a plane ride away. Here at M Dental Greenwich we are committed to aftercare. This includes follow up appointments but also us taking the time to carefully explain how best to care for your new smile.

When Treatments Abroad Don’t Go To Plan

We understand that people choose treatment abroad for many reasons. This could be down to cost, availability and in some cases personal recommendations. We aren’t here to judge anyone for those reasons. But what we are here to say is that it is important to ensure you are fully aware of the risks and that you have a plan in place. We also recommend against travelling alone for dental tourism treatments.

If you have experienced dental tourism, and had treatment yourself, and experience any discomfort, complications or require a second opinion, reach out to our M Dental Greenwich team. We have supported many patients who have experienced similar situations and we are not here to judge. We can guide you through your options to help restore your oral health and confidence.

Thinking About Going Abroad for Dental Tourism?

If you are considering dental tourism please ensure you do plenty of research. Check the qualifications of the clinic and dentist and ask what their plan is for aftercare. Ensure that you understand what happens if complications arise, and be wary of deals that seem too good to be true. We recommend, here at M Dental Greenwich, against traveling for dental tourism, but if you do go for this option speak to a UK dentist first. A consultation here gives you the opportunity to understand your options and risks from a highly experienced, and regulated dentist.

Your oral health isn’t just a short term investment. Longevity and the effect on your overall health needs to be a consideration.
